Fat Biking Near Montrose

A variety of year-round recreation opportunities is what brings the outdoor enthusiasts to Montrose, Colorado. It used to be that when the snow began falling, the bikes were hung up for the winter. When fat biking came on the scene, winter became fair game for pedal turning. For those unfamiliar, fat biking is off-road biking with large, wide tires designed specifically for cutting through snow, as well as sand, mud, and other soft terrains.

Areas to Explore by Fat Bike

Give the sport a go at Buzzard Gulch! Buzzard Gulch offers varied singletrack and gorgeous views of the Uncompahgre Valley while being close enough to town for a quick ride that won't take up the whole day.

The Uncompahgre Plateau west of town also offers fat biking opportunities. Head up Dave Wood Road to the US Forest Service boundary lot. From there, you'll find snowmobile trails that weave their way through the forest and offer many miles of riding. Make sure you pick a route that's been packed down. You can also bike up Dave Wood Road past Elk Mountain Resort then turn right onto Divide Road and cut back on the Spring Creek Rim Trail which is the first available right-hand turn when you get onto Divide Road. Stop by the Montrose Visitor Center for a map of the Uncompahgre Plateau!

If you're up for an overnight adventure, book an unforgettable fat biking trip to the Spring Creek Hut offered by San Juan Huts.
