Museums
Cimarron Railroad Exhibit  Surrounded by the soaring walls of the Cimarron River Canyon, the magnificently restored Locomotive 278 sits on an 1882 Denver & Rio Grande trestle - the last remaining structure from the former Black Canyon route of the Rio grande Narrow Gauge.  Exhibits are open year-round.  Visitor's Center is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  For more information call (970) 249-4074.

Montrose County Historical Museum  This museum was founded in 1964 by the Montrose County Historical Society.  The collection focuses on the pioneering and settling of Western Colorado.  While visiting the museum you will also see a caboose, a stagecoach and vintage machinery and equipment.  The museum is open mid May through mid October.  For more information please call (970) 249-2085.

Museum of the Mountain West  In this museum you'll find over 500,000 artifacts from the circa of 1840-1940.  You will see the old west come to life as you explore the recreated town and reconstructed historic buildings.  The museum is open year-round.  For more information call (970) 249-4162.

Ute Indian Museum and Ouray Memorial Park  Experience one of the most complete collections and interpretations of the Ute people.  This museum sits on 8.65 acres of the original plot of land where Chief Ouray and his wife, Chipeta, lived.  On site there are exhibits, a gift store, American Indian books and changing gallery space.  There is also a native plants garden, picnic areas, sculptures and tipis.  The museum is open year-round.  For more information call (970) 249-3098.

Historic Walking Tour
The Historic Montrose Downtown Walking Tour consists of 12 interpretive signs within a five-block area of Downtown Montrose.  Four signs depict the early history of Montrose and the Uncompahgre Valley, and eight additional signs highlight downtown buildings and the people associated with them who played a part in creating Montrose's history.  A map of the Historic Montrose Downtown Walking tour can be picked up at the Visitors Center located inside the Chamber of Commerce.

Filled with eclectic shops, restaurants, galleries and more, Montrose's charming downtown is the perfect blend of old and new.  Historic Victorian buildings and beautifully decorated shop windows provide the perfect setting for a variety of community events, designed to keep neighbors and friends in touch.

Montrose Genealogy Center
This center includes computers for online database searches and a collection of genealogy reference books.  The center boasts 120 courthouse books and numerous volumes of the Montrose newspapers from the late 1890's to the 1930's.  Our free, volunteer staff can help you search for your family both in Montrose and anywhere else in the  world.  Open year-round.  Hours: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 1:00PM-4:00PM and the first and third Saturday 9:30AM-12:30PM or make an appointment.  Not affiliated with any church. For more information please call  (970) 240-1755.
