Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area
Millions of years in the making, the Gunnison Gorge is full of wildlife and magnificent views. Bighorn sheep, elk, deer, wintering bald eagles and migratory waterfowl move below the gorge's polished black rock walls and sculpted red sandstone. Located just northeast of Montrose, this 64,000-acre recreation area offers Gold Medal trout fishing, whitewater rafting, mountain hiking and a designated RV area. The river can be reached via four hiking trails, all of which can be accessed from Falcon Road.
