Biking

In and around Montrose there are fantastic road cycling and mountain bike trails.  Here is a sampling of some of what you will find.

Road Cycling Routes
The many paved county roads around Montrose offer several rides of various distances.
The Montrose “Bike Routes, Parks and Trails Map” not only shows the paved bike
trails within the city, it maps out several routes with distance and elevation profiles.
The Black Canyon and Cerro Summit rides are the most challenging.

Mountain Bike Routes
Within the city limits of Montrose is a dirt trail system that is interlaced with the concrete
trails in Cerise Park.

The Public Lands adjacent to Montrose have numerous mountain bike routes. Public Lands trails can be found in three general areas: Be sure to be prepared for a backcountry experience!

Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area
The GGNCA is north of Montrose in an area commonly referred to as the Adobes. The main trails used by mountain bikers emanate from two main trailheads - the Flattop Trailhead and the Peach Valley Staging Area.  The BLM Gunnison Gorge NCA trail maps have both trailheads listed.  A third access point near the end of the Bostwich Park Road is Kurts Trail.  This trail crosses private property, is open only to mountain bikes, but is closed after September 15.  Mountain bikers will most likely encounter numerous motorized trail users.  The NCA is interlaced with many trails, and some aren’t suitable for mountain biking – mostly too steep.  The best seasons to ride these trails are spring and fall.  Avoid these trails after heavy rain.

Dry Creek Area
These trails are located in the canyon/mesa country west of Montrose.  The main trailhead for the area is the Tabeguache Trailhead at the north end of Shavano Valley Road.  Access to riding is also possible from Transfer Road.  The “Montrose Area Biking Trails” map has this area’s trails marked on Map A.  Spring and fall riding season.

Uncompahgre Plateau
These trails are located in the high country southwest of Montrose.  Most of these trails are accessible from the Divide Road by way of Dave Wood Road and Highway 90 The Montrose Area Biking Trails map has these trails marked on map B.  The US Forest Service Uncompahgre – Plateau Division map is also helpful. Summer and early fall riding season.  The Aspen and Buck trails are the most popular.

The Montrose Area Biking Trails map can be purchased at the Official Montrose Visitors Center located in the Chamber of Commerce.

The guidebook “Bicycling the Uncompahgre Plateau” provides excellent information about the Uncompahgre Plateau and its mountain bike trails. Cascade Bicycles and Jeans Westerner have the book, and are excellent sources for biking services and information. The Public Lands office, 2505 Townsend Ave., can provide helpful biking information. The Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association is the local bike trail advocacy group (COPMOBA) www.copmoba.org
